I don’t know about you – but I am finding that the year is flying by.  I can’t believe we are already in October and not at the beginning nearing the middle.  Now you might be wondering why this is important other than booking the work Christmas party locale if you haven’t already.

It is important as for those of you that belong to a health fund with extras most will run out by the 30th of December.  So what does mean to you?  For those of you that belong to a Health Fund with Optical extras it is time to get your eyes tested and get new glasses.

Now you might be thinking Prescription Safety Glasses are ugly why would I want a pair of those.  To answer this question we can mention the reason why this business was set up originally.  Which was to make a significant impact on the incidence of preventable eye injuries, with over 90% of accidental eye injuries being preventable.

To further answer your question many of the prescription safety frames could double as sunglasses.  So why not have prescription sunglasses that can be worn on the worksite?  Making it near impossible for you to forget to wear them.  We love the simplicity of this option for everyone that has to work outside or drive during the day.  As all of us know how glory it can be outside during the day.

Another reason that may compel you to update your safety glasses is scratching.  I know that when my glasses get scratched I don’t want to wear them.  As vision is no longer clear, in some cases the scratches can be so bad that the lenses are nearly opaque.  Which makes people less likely to wear their safety glasses.  So why not have a spare pair that has nice clear lenses, so your eyes don’t have a period of time when they are not protected.  Because unfortunately, that will be the time that they get injured.

For all of you that are working in health care, especially those of you working in hospitals the level of personal protective equipment (PPE) is very high and in many cases, the need to wear over specs over your prescription safety glasses is a common occurrence, in many instances a face shield must be worn as well.  This means that there are 3 layers of plastic that have been looked through to see, 3 layers that can be subjected to fogging, scratching, and otherwise impede vision.

Therefore the ability to remove one of these layers lessens the chance of your vision being impacted by at least a 1/3.  Also having the ability to remove the over specs, can improve your comfort and vision substantially.  Bearing all of this in mind having prescription safety glasses for work (that you may be able to claim in your tax – talk to your accountant), is a no-brainer.

The moral of the story is that you need to think about your eye protection and that for those of you that belong to a health fund – you need to get your orders in before the end of the year to use this year’s optical allocation.  Or say goodbye to your 2021 Optical Extras allocation forever.
