Why wear safety glasses?

I was thinking about this question and for me it is simple; they protect your eyes.  Then, I thought a bit further and figured that being an Optometrist my prospective was probably swayed towards eye health.  So for the average person the reason why would they wear safety glasses is a bit more complicated.

For the vast majority of people I come into contact with, they wear them, as it is a requirement for their work.  Alternatively their work has provided them and they wear them, as they are cheap sunglasses.  Every now and again I come across something that is actively concerned about their eyes and wants some sort protection.

But how to people know that they are getting the right safety glasses for themselves?  Well previous experience helps.  Work sites do tend to have the correct safety appliances for their staff, if they will wear them.  Another way can be regulations and meeting certain safety standards.  Such as medium impact, and positive sealed safety glasses.  But I have to ask is there something better suited?

For some situations the answer would certainly be yes.  Rather than the basic safety glasses provided, which fog up and scratch easily.  Why not have something a little more expensive that fits comfortably and has anti-fog coatings.  Your staff would be happier to wear them and more likely to look after them.  An example would be the Bolle Rush Plus – they have a large wrap-around lens and anti-fog and hard coatings on both sides of the lens and are available in numerous colour options.

Alternatively if dust is a problem why not get your staff positive sealed safety glasses or even goggles.  Both of these options are available in prescription and standard safety glasses and help keep the dust away from the eyes.
