Considerations for choosing PPE post COVID

The fact that your eye protection and personal protective equipment (PPE) work together has been made more obvious since the start of the COVID pandemic.  The easiest example is the wearing of masks and safety glasses and not being able to see clearly use to fogging of the lenses.  This then creates a workplace hazard.

You need to look for eye protection that not only includes quality anti-fog coatings but also doesn’t sacrifice style or comfort while enabling you to complete your job safely.

So how do you select your eye protection?

Firstly, eye protection must be selected for the task at hand.  For example, if you are working in a dusty environment indoors.  You shouldn’t choose sunglasses without a gasket (positive seal).

Fogging of a lens occurs when tiny droplets form on the lens and scatter incoming light, making it more difficult to see clearly.  As a result of the COVID-19 pandemic and the requirements to wear masks, selecting eye protection that has anti-fog technology has become increasingly important.  We have all seen how wearing eye protection with face coverings can cause fogging to occur.  Fogged lenses can be frustrating and depending on your conditions dangerous.  If you are constantly having to remove your safety glasses to remove the fog on the lenses, this may not only result in work interruptions and may affect productivity but can also leave your eye exposed to dangerous workplace hazards.

Effective anti-fog coatings can help workers see longer.  Look for eye protection with advanced or premium anti-fog coatings that allow multiple wiping and/or washings without hindering the anti-fog performance.

There are eye protection options designed for working in challenging situations, such as hot, humid conditions, indoor/outdoor work, physically demanding tasks, and climate-controlled areas.  Fogging can result in all of these, especially when used with any type of mask or facial coverings.

Anti-fog isn’t the only coating that you should consider as scratches can easily be distracting and obscure your visual field of vision.  Scratch resistance in tough work environments may be helpful to enhance the durability of your eye protection.  There are some models that offer both coating options.

Comfort, if your eye protection isn’t comfortable, you may be tempted to remove your eye protection or not wear it all of the time.  By doing so, you may expose your eyes to workplace hazards that can result in injury.  From small heads to large heads and different shaped faces, find eye protection that is designed to be a secure and comfortable fit for an extended period of time.  Seek out a reputable brand that offers a range of adjustable and varied designs, which can help provide comfort to individuals across a diverse workforce.

There are currently eye protection options that offer – soft bridges for noses that have previously had uncomfortable or safety glasses that pinch.  Safety Glasses that have a sports-like fit, enabling the pressure to be applied to the back of the head, instead of the temples, achieving a secure and comfortable fit even during rapid head movement.  There are even ratcheted adjustable temples that allow the lenses to be adjusted to fit in closer to your face

Wearing your eye protection should be comfortable without sacrificing safety.  You may also wish to look for options that fit your style requirements while also meeting your safety goals.

PPE compatibility.

If you have double pressure on a point it will end up being very uncomfortable.  Luckily, there are eye protection options that can combine well with other personal protection requirements.  An example of such consideration includes wearers of earmuffs as hearing protection, considering the temple length and thickness when choosing eye protection, to minimize the interference with the seal of the earmuff cushion.  You should consult us should you have any questions.  Eye injuries can occur while wearing eye protection if they do not fit properly.  Properly fitting eye protection should cover the soft tissue around the eye and not leave large gaps.  If they are too small of the wearer’s head, it can cause gaps between the eye protection and the face.  Selecting the proper eye protection for the task and ensuring proper-fitting eyewear can help reduce worker eye injuries.  This can also help with comfort and compatibility concerns with other PPE.
